KAJTO – Gorredijk - Friesland (Netherlands)
In the year 1988, the group Kajto began singing songs with Esperanto texts.
In the summer of 1989, during the World Esperanto Congress in Brighton, England, the CD 'Kajto was presented, which also proved to be the first Esperanto CD ever in the world.
During the years that followed, the group traveled to many countries to perform, and other CDs were published. In the year 2004, in the city of Aalen, Germany, the FAME Culture Prize was awarded to Kajto as recognition of the importance of their contribution to the Esperanto music culture.
Currently, Kajto consists of Nanne Kalma and Ankie van der Meer, who use this name for their Esperanto repertoire.
Already since 1980, Ankie and Nanne have played music together. Initially in the Frisian group Irolt, later in Kat yn 't Seil, Kajto and Liereliet. With these groups or in duo, singing in Esperanto, in the Frisian and Dutch languages, they recorded and published more than forty albums on vinyl and compact discs.
In August 2023, they present Kajto's 9th album, Sen Timo (Without fear), in digital format at Vinilkosmo.
Regularly, they have toured through many countries, not only in Europe but also in North America, Australia and Asia.
With regard to the lyrics, Kajto does not know limits. Ankie and Nanne sing about various topics. In their repertoire, sailing and historical themes play an important role, but they also poke fun at the events of everyday life. Equally, they like to score Esperanto and Frisian poems.
During festivals, coffee concerts, cultural evenings, or workshops, Ankie and Nanne's programs are always humourous and suitably adapted to the situation, wherever they are.
During concerts the two Kajto members, can announce and introduce their songs in various languages, such as Esperanto, Dutch, Frisian, French, English, and German. They accompany themselves with various instruments, such as guitar, mandoline, shawm and concertina.
